Angry Ceiling Fan Replacement Switch

Purchased a replacement 3-speed fan switch for an Emerson ceiling fan. The new Fantec No. 21105 switch has 4 "insert wire" type connections. The four are marked L, 1, 2, and 3. The old switch has 3 wires coming from it: Black, Blue and Red. How do I match the colors to the new positions??

Thanks.

What do you have comming out of the wall (number of wires, colors.)? Is this in your home? Is this an exhaust fan?

I think he's talking about a paddle fan, and I think he's talking about the pull-chain switch. Even so, I don't know the answer, and this question is rarely answered online. I think that's because there are just too many different kinds of these switches.

Can anybody pull off a miracle here?

I appreciate all the replies. The final solution turned out to be not to use the pull chain switch that I bought. I returned the switch to the home improvement store and went shopping at another competiteor home improvement store. This store carried the exact same switch but also carried the "wires coming from the switch" version. Apparently the wire colors remain standard after about 20+ years and it works just fine. Thanks again.
