loose neutral what can it cause

can a loose neutral in the switch box cause appliances like computers ,televisions dryers to completely quit working or blow out

Yes. Lets say for example you have a loose neutral in a box that a 3-wire homerun comes into. If the neutral that is loose is the homerun neutral and the other leg is feeding the furnace (or any other motor load for that matter), it can back-feed all the way through the motor and feed the other circuit with 240 volts. Loose neutrals are electricians' worst nightmare.

Grounding Receptacles

I've followed with interest the many discussions of how to ground receptacles in older houses. Mine is about 40 years old in Fairfax County VA. My electrician told me the boxes are grounded and I can ground the receptacles by connecting the grounding screw on the receptacle to the back of the box. A salesman at Home Depot said I can use self-grounding receptacles, which have a copper clip where the receptacle ear attaches to the box. If I follow the salesman's advice, (a) will it make a good ground? and (b) will it meet code?Read More

I need to install a circuit for a welder that's 220 VAC, 21 amp output. The plug on the welder has 2 vertical prongs (one longer than the other) and a round prong (ground, I assume) below them. I'm sure I can find the right receptacle but am not sure what amperage of breaker I need. Any thoughts?Read More
