A single control-wire can operate or release a relay or contactor. This circuit requires a resistor in series with the operating coil and the single control wire connects to a momentary-contact SPDT switching device.

One of the coil leads is connected to "Ground" and the relay will release when the other coil lead is switched to "Ground" which results in Zero volts across the operating coil.
