smoke detector troubles

the smoke detectors in my mother in kaws apt go off at the drop of a hat. the steam of a tea kettle sets it off. Also, it is only a year old. My question is, do smoke detectors have sensitivity settings?

thank you

Residential smokes do not have an adjustment. Do not hesitate to assume it is faulty and replace it.

Thanks, that was a quick reply. If I replace it is there a way I can keep it from going off from the tea kettle. the existing smoke detector is only a year old.

thanks again

Can you move the teakettle? Probably easier than moving the smoke detector. This is one of the reasons why smoke detector instructions tell you not to install them in or near kitchens or bathrooms.
