stove wiring

stove wiring
I'm trying to change stoves in my mom's kitchen and the old stove has wires running to a metal box then wires to the wall. I was expecting to see an outlet to just plug into. How do I remove the wires to get it out and then wire up the new one? Is this something a novice like myself should attempt? Finally, Big Thanks to everyone on the board who takes time to answer questions and help people out many miles away!

Yes, a novice can handle this. But, I CANOT STRESS ENOUGH, THE IMPORTANCE OF TURNING OFF THE CICUIT BREAKER WHEN WORKING ON THIS (or any) APPLIANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell us more. Is this a free standing range?

Turn off the breaker. Take the cover of the box and tell us how many wires there are. Ther could be 4 (black, white, red, bare) or 3 (black, red, bare). You can get a receptacle to go on in place of the blank cover.

Thanks guys,
I'm gonna go back over there this afternoon and check it out again. It's not a free standing oven, it fits into the counter tops. It has a stove top and oven on the unit. Hope this helps, no one is living there now and i'm doing repairs on my off days so my me, my wife and 6 week old can move into the house in july. Once again thanks for the info guys.
