Transformer Problems

I have a 150W transformer powering undercabinet lighting (with bulbs totaling 147W. One transformer totally quit working after several months of working sometimes (sometimes not). I recently replaced it. The new transformer gets excessivley hot. Though the lights work, I'm afraid I'm about to blow this transformer and that the first transformer was not defective.
I'm not sure why I have a problem.

Is the second unit the same wattage as the first? How much wattage to your lights use (number of lights X watts per lamp)? How much can the supply deliver?
Some new units run pretty hot, I've seen some run at 50-60C in "normal" operation. That's fairly hot to the touch.

I have either 20 7.5W bulbs or 18 8W bulbs (I can't remember which). The transformers are both 150W. Is it possible I have the wires reversed going to the transformer? Or, would it not be working at all if the wires were reversed? Thanks!

You're working with AC here, I don't believe polarity should make a difference. It is possible you have a bad new transformer also.

Although the transformer is technically rated for 150W, and you have loaded it to the max, I would consider that it is overloaded. Transformers get hot, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't normally load a constant load like lighting to 100% of its source.

Just one other point is the transformer somewhere where it is ventilated good? Lack of air movement can cause a problem with them.
