Will Code allow the use of Ty-Raps to neaten a bundle of Romex?

Yes, but bundling more than four cables is going to cause other problems. Sometimes neatness is bad. In this case bundling too many wires in the name of neatness causes excessive heat buildup.

3M sells a romex rack, nails onto your joists or studs and up to 5 romex cables snap onto it with appropriate separation so you do not get heat buildup and have to derate your conductors. Makes for a very neat installation.

Careful, even if you don't have any derating issues, cables are not allowed to support other cables. You will still need code required support for each cable even if you tie wrap them together.

US 220V vs. European 220V

I have a few European appliances in my house that I would like to use but they require 220V outlets. I am already using a few of them with small step-up converters but I don't think that this is the best solution for this problem. Instead of buying another step-up converter for another room I was wondering if I could use the 220V line that I have in my house (currently just for the dryer) and fit it with European outlets. A) Would it be legal? B) Are US 220V specifications the same as European 220's? C) Would it be safe to connect my equipment to the new outlets? Thank you very much for your help.Read More

Remodeling at friend's house

I recently helped a friend with some remodeling work. I am not a licensed contractor and I was not aware that technically, my assistance was illegal. I've been doing furniture work, house remodeling, welding, and construction on my homes for years. When I was asked to help, I didn't give it much thought legally. In the process of taking out part of a wall, I had to move some outlets/switches, and install a GFCI outlet (kitchen). I also replaced an old light over his sink with two 4" lights housed in a new cabinet. I had done a lot of this type of stuff in my last 2 houses (which passed inspection before selling them) and lately have been taking a home study electrical course to gain more knowledge with electrical work. I was careful to follow the NEC and local codes during the process. The house was built in 1950, so basically anything I did was an improvement over the existing wiring. Questions: 1. What should I do to ensure the work is OK? 2. Should I have a licensed electrician go over the work to make it official? 3. Is there a 'general contractors license' or something similar that I should obtain for any future work (I am aware that an electrical license requires apprenticeship, etc.)? I have other friends who use handymen, etc., to do just about every odd job around their homes. Many of these guys are not licensed. I would like to do things right, and I am willing to qualify for any license I need. Any adivce would be appreciated. Thanks, MTRead More
