Question halogen desk lamp switch

I have purchased a rheostat switch to replace a faulty switch in my halogen desk lamp (its a rotary switch that dims the light as well as turning it off and on). The switch was already removed before I got involved in the repair and I need to know how to wire the switch back into the lamp. There are 6 wires, two from the switch, two from the lamp and two from the outlet cord. I connected the following: one lamp to switch, one lamp to cord and finally one cord to switch. The lamp came on full blast, wouldn't dim at all and then my circuit breaker in the house blew. Any help would be great before I cause great damage. What am I doing wrong?

Is this a 2wire flat lampcord ? If so, the wire that goes to the larger "blade " on the plug end will connect to the wire that is attached to the screwshell of the lampholder. The other wire in the cord will connect to one of the wires from the switch. The 2nd wire from the switch will connect to the other wire (attached to the center tab) of the lampholder. If you have a continuity tester, it makes it alot easier to verify which wires go where.

halogen desk lamp

There are two wires coming down from the lamp itself, no screw plate to speak of...there are two wires extending from the switch itself...and the outlet cord is simply peeled apart to make two wires. It is black plastic coated and is the regular cord type...like on most extension cords. The two wires coming from the lamp are covered in white fabric type cloth...separately. Did I confuse you? Sorry

You will need a continuity tester to figure out which wire is which.

On the linecord, one wire is ribbed, the other smooth (except for
the rib where the wires joined). The ribbed one is neutral,
and connects directly to one of the lamp terminals (the shell on a screw in bulb). The smooth one connects to
one of the switch terminals (wire), the other switch terminal
goint to the other terminal of the lamp socket ( center contact on
a screw in socket)
