Finished Basement outlet placement

I have just finished framing my basement. I am ready to place my wall outlet. I was told by someone that the outlets in a finished basement have to be 36" above the floor, but I can't find anything that states that in the NEC. Do I have to place the outlets at 36" or can I put them at 12" above the floor?

The NEC has no such requirement. It is possible that your city may have such a requirement, especially if basement flooding is common in your area. Call your building department and ask.

I always hate those, "I was told by someone ..." requirements.

I just like them higher and in the utility area if there are gas appliances it is a good idea to have them higher. The main reason I think they are low is to hide cords out of the way behind furniture.
