Ground For Home Service

When breifly disconnecting and re-connecting the house ground from the water pipe---sparking occured. What would be the most likely cause for this. We just had a new 200 amp service and breaker box installed.
Thanks for your help

When two or more buildings share both a common Power Company transformer and a common metal water piping system, it is inevitable that there will be some current flow on the grounding electrode sytem and there is no easy way to avoid it.

If the spark was very big, you might want to check the amount of current with a clamp on amprobe. If the current is more than a few amps, I would have your Electrical system checked by an electrician for a missing/bad neutral.

It is likely an open neutral. Since your service is new it is not likely yours. It could be any of your neighbors or even the power company.
