what to do with "extra" power wires?

An indoor sprinkler control box in my garage had power wires running directly into the control box. Now, alas, the poor control box has died, and the replacement control box uses a normal three-pronged plug instead of a direct connection.

So what do I do with the extra power wires? I'm looking for something that's not a lot of work and won't require a lot of tearing up of the painted wallboard. There's already another power box within a couple of feet, so putting in an extra power box seems like overkill, especially when it's in the spot where I want to put the new control unit. Also, the wires come out of the wall don't appear to have any slack in them.

I'm sure that just capping the wires and shoving them back into the wall is not what I want to do (or is it?).

thanks in advance for any recommendations...

Is there a hole or knockout in the back of the control box. Slip the cable through, cap all wires, tag them for future reference. This way they are accessable for inspection and future use if need be.
