Circuit Breaker Size for Air Compressor

I am about to wire my new shop area and I have my first air compressor. It has 13amps stamped on the plate (it is a 110v unit). Should I run a dedicate circuit (12/2) with a 15 amp breaker to protect the motor or use the normal 20 amp breaker I was planning for all the 110v outlets?

My entire shop is wired with 20amp/110v circuits for my 110v power tools. I wouldn't use anything lighter in a workshop.

Yes, 12 is the thing for shops. Run a dedicated wire to a dedicated breaker for the air comp. A 12 on a 20 for it.

Per Table 210.21(B)(2) of the 2002 NEC, the maximum cord-and- plug connected load to a 15 amp receptacle is on a 15 or 20 amp circuit is 12 amps. The maximum on a 2o amp circuit with a 20 amp receptacle is 16 amps.

You need to install a 20 amp circuit with #12 wire to a 20 amp rated receptacle.

That helps - thanks. Now a follow-up question. Since my garage and workshop are on a concrete slab, all recepticles must be GFI protected. If I use a dedicated circuit for the compressor, is there a way to avoid the GFI?

as long as the receptacle is a single(accepts only one plug) receptacle and serves only the air compressor(dedicated)it does not have to be gfci protected
