220V Air Conditioner Outlet

I just bought a mobile home and want to install my 220V window air conditioner but there is not an appropriate outlet. There is a 220V outlet for an electric dryer that I do not use close enough to the window I want to use. My air conditioner says it should be connected to a 20A breaker. The dryer outlet is on a 30A breaker. Can I just change the huge dryer plugin to a smaller plugin that will accept my air condioner plug or do I also have to change the breaker to a 20A or won't this work at all? Thanks for your help.

You should change both the plug and the breaker. It will be fine if you change both.

I'm assuming you have a flush mount dryer receptacle (mounted inside a box which is inside the wall). You may need to splice some short pieces of 12 guage wire onto the larger 10 guage wires that are connected to the dryer receptacle. You may have a difficult time connecting the 10 guage wires to a 20 amp receptacle.
