How close can subpanel be to main?

I need to install a subpanel to complete the electrical for a new basement addition. Per code, can the subpanel be 1 to 2 feet from the main panel?

I'm not sure if there are any local codes, but mine is right next to my main panel (less than a foot), and the inspectyor had no issues with it.

As long as you can get the connectors between them its fine.

Electrical component located in wall unit bed

I have a wall unit bed with overhead lights. There is a module that has two receptacles, phone jack and dimmer switch for the lights overhead. The dimmer switch stopped working, but everything else is fine. How do I fix this and, if necessary, where do I find a replacement for the entire module?

Okay, trying to hook up a ceiling fan. I have two wires that previously hooked up a light (1 yellow and 1 white). Also many other wires but notably a orange one that is connected to nothing. Trying to determine If the Orange wire is ground or should I spice into a black wire that has many other splices into it already.
