Wierd electrical problem

Hello,

A month ago I installed a ceiling fan which has two internal switches; one that controls the light and the other to control the speed of the fan. The power for the fan is controlled by a wall switch, so when i wanted to turn on only the fan I would flip the wall switch to on and turn off the light switch on the unit. Everything was cool up to yesterday. Now the fan works partially when I turn off the lights, it makes a buzzing sound and barely moves, but when i turn the lights on it works fine. Seems like the power to the fan is weak and it gets stronger just when I turn the lights swith on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

when you say turn on the lights are you referring to the wall switch or the internal switch?

sounds to me like an internal problem w/ the fan. Too late to remove and return?? if so contact the manufacturer, ive had personal success in dealing w/ manu's for fans. (depending on who it is!)

I thought so. Yep, i think is kind of late to return it. I would try to contact the manufacturer. Thanks a lot for your time.

The wall switch is not a dimmer switch, is it?

John, FatKid:

Yes as the matter of fact it is. It is one of those that deems just by touching it. Hmmm, so when I turn the switch on it is probably dimmed down so not enough juice to move the fan?

Actually, I was thinking you may have permanently damaged the fan motor by using a dimmer switch it was not designed for.

The motor works when the lights are on at the same time. This makes me believe that something else broke beside the motor. What do you think?

i would swap out the dimmer for a single pole switch, and hope for the best.
