Relocation of AC Units

I am in the process of relocating the exterior AC units of my residence forced air system. The units are 220V and originally wired with 10-2 w ground from the service panel. White conductor taped black for second phase. My past experence with 220V service suggest that 10-3 w ground is the usual wire configuration. White being neutral w ground and black red being the loads. Can you hint at why 10-2 w ground might be an acceptable alternative.

Your A/C is pure 220 and needs no neutral. Even if you had a third wire, you would have nothing at the A/C to connect it to.
