Main 100 Amp breaker keeps tripping

I just purchased a home and when just started moving in. The main 100 Amp breaker trips once a day. The only things running are an air conditioner 15 amps and a TV and a cordless phone and the lights in the rooms . The last time it tripped the only thing on was the Air Conditoner. I dod notice a humming noise from the AC when it tripped last and suspect it may be defective, but wouldn't that trip the 20 amp breaker and not the main 100 amp breaker. Any insight would be apperciated

I have seen several Federeal mains take a dump and havnt had much experience with GE but I think it is a problem with the main in this case. You will need to pull the meter to replace this and unless you have the experience it might be a good idea to get some help. Its not difficult but can be dangerous.

Could be you have aluminum wire feeding your main breaker and it's loose and heating it up faking the breaker into thinking it's overloaded. You'll need to have it changed to copper but that's not a DIYer job because the top of the meter still has live wires that will make a most impressive fireworks display if you create a shortcircuit.
