red outlet

I have one outlet in the house I just bought that is red. Does this mean anything specific or is it just the color of the outlet. The outlet itself is red not the plate.

Jason.

It is most likely a hospital grade, isolated equipment ground receptacle. Someone most likely installed for electronic equipment if the house is wired with metal conduit and metal boxes. However,if the house is wired with type NM ( romex ) and plastic boxes, the ground is already isolated. Then the receptacle would serve no purpose as far as isolating the equipment ground

...or, I've seen some people install colored receptacles for aesthetic reasons (decorating). Mostly back in the '60s though...
