loose junction box

I am trying to install a ceiling fan but the junction box is loose on one side. Can I fix it myself?

Be sure it is rated to support a ceiling fan. It will be marked inside the box. If it is loose, then it is not a fan box or not installed properly. Tell us which and we can advise further.

If the box is loose on one side, that means that it is connected to a joist on the other side. As Ron said, this is not sufficiently secure for a ceiling fan. Check out fan brace kits at your home improvement center. These things can be normally installed from below.
