Outdoor Ceiling Fan

I plan to install a ceiling fan on my patio arbor which currently has no electrical wiring. It would be easier and cosmetically better to
mount the fan bracket directly to the arbor, rather than installing an electrical box, and running wiring inside PVC to an existing
outside outlet.

My main question is the necessity of an electrical box if the fan bracket can be mounted securely to the arbor without it ?
Also, is there any problem wiring directly to the outdoor outlet ?

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

A box is necessary to legally contain a splice. I don't believe most fan housings are rated to contain splices.
