Question installing ceiling fan

I am trying to install a ceiling fan (which has lights too). I find all the wires allright but one. I have the blacks and the whites together. I have the ground (3) together. Nevertheless, I have a blue wire from the fan which I do not have any wire to attach it to. I checked other fans in the house and they all have a red wire from the roof (from the house) which is attached to the blue wire from the fan. Does anyone knows what to do? When I turned it one like it is now only the fan works but not the lights! I would appreciate anybody's help.

Your other ceilings were prewired for a fan with light. This one is not.

You have three main options: (1) Simply connect the blue wire to the same place that the black wire is connected. This will mean that the wall switch will operate both the light and fan, and that you will need to use the pull chain to control which one or both comes on. (2) Buy an add-on remote control unit to give you independent control of the light and fan without using the chains. (3) Replace the cable between the ceiling and the wall switch with one that has a red wire in it. Then you would replace the simplex switch with a duplex switch.
