wall switch
#1

Hi!
I need information on installing a wall switch
and material needed.
My problem is I have pull down stairs that goes up to the attic.
I have a light in the attic that to turn it on
and off you have to pull a chain.
I was wondering how to install a wall switch
on a beam near the entrance without climbing all the way up to the top platform in the dark to find the light to turn it on.
I really appreciate your help.
Thank You

Why not put it on a wall somewhere near the opening? Then you could just turn it on before you start up (if you think you can remember not to leave it on all the time). To do that, you would start by drilling a hole in the top plate of the wall to receive the switch from the attic. Then you buy an old-work box and cut an opening in the wall the same size as the box. Then fish a new cable through the hole in the top plate to the opening. After that, it's simple.
If this sounds like a good idea to you, let us know and we can provide more details. You might want to start by picking up a home wiring book, since that will teach you proper technique.
Also, before you come back, tell us whether this light is on a 15-amp or a 20-amp breaker.
