outside wiring

my outside lamppost has a underground wire that runs from the post to the side of my house. the previous owner put a plug on the end of the romex and plugged it into an outlet. My breaker keeps on popping. it looks like the plug end has some burn marks on it. I am going to put a GFI in the place of the outlet in a weather tight box. .Should I just wire the light into the GFI?

Thanks any other Idea's

This circuit should be GFCI protected before it leaves the house. This would protect the buried cable, the receptacle and the light. Can you install a GFCI receptacle on the line inside the house?

I will check and see if that is possible. I assumed that the line went right to the circuit breaker. If the line goes right to the breaker should I cut into it and install a GFI or would it be ok to install the GFI were the line goes outside. Thanks
