Whats a bonding wire for? (on a gas/electronic pool heater)
Hi all, just registered to this sight. Looks like a great place to ask questions...and possibly help someone else with my knowledge
I am installing a gas pool heater. The old one was a milivolt (pilot light) and therefore didnt have any electrical wireing to go with it. The new one has an electronic ignition.
Well I am pretty sure I have everything figured out. It comes wired for 220v and I have followed the instructions to convert it to 110v. The one thing I dont understand is there is a lug on the outside casing with a sticker saying some like "dont forget to install the bonding wire". So I looked in the owners manual and all it says is "connect a bonding wire (8 ga copper) to the bonding lug on the outside of the heater".
So great, I attach an 8 ga wire to the "bonding lug". So here is my question.......where do I attach the other end of this bonding wire? Is is supposed to attach somewhere to the burner? In otherwords....its a wire to ground the burner to the case?
TIA,
Trevor

Thanks,
I think ill shoot Mr. Goodrich an email to verify this, but from what I read, I may not have to do anything with that bonding wire because I do not have a light. And actually what I have is a spa, not a pool. In fact there is no electrical within 5 feet of the spa so I think im safe. Thanks for the link.

A #8 AWG solid copper conductor must be run from the lug on the heater to the spa's bonding grid. Connect, with an approved means (split bolt), to the #8 solid copper conductor found on a similar lug on the pump motor.
