I JUST REPLACED THE SERVICE ENTRANCE TO MY HOME FROM THE WEATHERHEAD TO THE SE PANEL. THE LOCAL INSPECTOR CAME TO LOOK AT IT, AND SAID I DID A NICE JOB. THURSDAY, THE POWER COMPANY COMES TO DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT, AND WILL ALSO BE MOVING THE METER OUTSIDE TO THE METER BOX I INSTALLED. MUCH THANKS TO YOU GUYS FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS ON GROUNDING, CLAMP USAGE, ETC.

Dedicated Generator Circuit

The Great Blackout of '03 got me thinking. My neighbor was kind enough to supply his portable generator for a few hours at a time to keep my refrigerator from spoiling during the blackout. A 12 ga extention cord was run into the house from the generator. I'm now in the market for a portable generator of my own for the next human, or, forces of nature electrical event. Here's my idea... I want to install a dedicated generator circuit -with one outlet per floor to power: the furnace, the refrigerator, and small light bulbs on each floor. The romex circuit would originate in the basement in a 1900 box connected to a length of SJ cord long enough to run out the basement window to plug into the portable generator. I would have to modify the permanent circuit to the furnace with a switch to allow connection to utility power or the generator circuit. Any problems with this idea??? Thanks. BillRead More

wiring switch at end of run

I've decided to finish out my basement and don't quite know how to do some (what might be very simple) wiring. I left my wiring book at the other house and am stumped. The light fixtures in the basement have pull chains. I'd like to change out the fixture, and add a switch to the light in one of the rooms. I've found all sorts of references for runs of lights, but not for just one single light. Question: How do you wire a single pole switch to operate one light fixture where the feed comes into the light and the switch is at the end of the run? Is this correct? connect Feed white to fixture white. Connect Feed black to "out to switch" black. Connect fixture black to "out to switch" white that has been marked with black tape. At the switch, mark the white wire with black tape and attach. Thanks for any help here!Read More
