Inline fan wiring

I need to wire an 8" inline fan to a switch. The fan's wires are relatively short, say about 8-10" long. Should I just place my gang box directly below the fan and run these wires through one of the punch outs?

Normally the box is mounted directly to the duct and the wires come in through a knockout on the back of the box.

I'm using flex duct so I see no way to mount the box to the duct.
