switch controls outlet

I have just installed pots in my living room and the switch that I want to control them now controls both sections of an outlet. I have brought the wire into the switch box. There are now three sets of wires coming into the switch box, the new wires not yet connected, wire to the outlet and the power source wire. This is how they are connected...white outlet wire nutted to white power, black outlet wire is looped around bottom scew on switch with about 3 in. wire nutted to the black power, red power wire goes to the top screw on switch. How do I rewire so that the outlet is on always and the switch controls the pots?

First of all, I believe that you have mixed up which cable is power and which cable goes to the outlet. The black/white cable is power, and the black/red/white cable goes to the outlet. Next, please double-check that the switch controls both halves of the duplex outlet. Are you sure it doesn't control just one half?

Here's how to connect your new black/white cable to the lights.
  • Connect the black to your new lights to the red wire and to a pigtail. Connect the other end of the pigtail back to where the red wire was formerly connected.
  • Connect the new white wire to the other two white wires.
  • Connect the new grounding wires to the other two grounding wires.

Thanks for the help John. Sorry for mix up but this is my first wiring job. My husband thinks that I should leave this kind of thing to professionals. Yes, the switch did control both sections of the outlet and your connections worked just fine. Thanks again.
