i'm looking for whole house protection and this product came up in a book i read, it's performance on paper look good, but then again, anything can be made to look good on paper, so that's why i'm asking in here.

for the same price you can get a name brand Hubbell HBL3W65 from Grainger with better specs. I have never heard of Tytewad, and probably wouldn't trust my service to them. I am buying the Hubbell unit! $160!

You could make your own if you wanted.
It's really just a big fat varistor with a couple of film polyester caps in most cases. Nothing really fancy. Same design as your typical surge protector, just at on a greater scale.
But, I've never heard of that brand, but the specs look pretty good. If the price is right and I would actually want one of those units I would probably buy this one.

The problem with making your own is that it would not be UL listed. Try getting your insurance company to pay up when they find out that you cobbled together something and then installed it in your main panel. I have never heard of tytewadd before, but there are any number of reputable manufacturers out there who make TVSS units. Hubbell, Leviton, Sola to name a few.
