celing fan

i am trying to replace my celing fan with a light fiture. But when we hook up the wiring the light is on all the time and the wall switch will on turn it off. we have 3 sets of wires one set has white wires. one set has black wires and one set has a black, white and red wire. we have taken off the switch plate and the black and red wires are hooked up to that can you tell me what i am doing wrong. we tried hooking up black to black, white to white and grounding the red we have tried a few combinations please help.

When you disconnected the fan do you recall how it was hooked up? did the switch control the fan the light or both? Is there more than one switch? (incidently do not ground the red wire.) Try and answer these ?'s and we can go from there.

Read this. It's not exactly the same as your situation, but it's close. Connect all the black wires to each other, but not to the light fixture. Connect the red from the ceiling to the black of the light fixture. Connect all white wires to each other and to the white wire of the light fixture.

P.S. Grounding the red is a suicide attempt. Never, ever connect a grounding connection to any wire except bare or green.
