wiring 2 lights b/w 2 3-way switches

i am trying to run 2 recessed lights (2 wire) b/w 2 3-way switches (3 wire). i have attempted to splice the 2nd light by way of a 2 wire splice and as a result, can get one light to illuminate, but the second does not and the first flickers. a schematic or link to a schematic would be helpful (preferrably color coded).

Let "-" mean a 14/2 cable, and let "=" mean a 14/3 cable.

This way cannot be made to work:

(1) Power-S1=L1=L2=S2

But either of these two ways will work:

(2) Power-S1=S1-L1-L1

or

(3) Power-S1=L1=S2 and L1-L2

Choose option (2) if you can, because that is the simplest solution and the least likely solution to screw up.

Let us know whether you choose option (2) or (3) and we'll provide connection details.

selection #3 seems to be the way to go.

At S1:
  • Power black wire to common (black) screw.
  • White wire to white wire.
  • Black and red wires of the 14/3 to the two traveler screws.
  • Bare to bare, pigtailed to green screw.
At S2:
  • Black wire to common (black) screw.
  • White and red wires to the two traveler screws.
  • Bare to green screw.
At L2:
  • Black wire to black wire from light.
  • White wire to white wire from light.
  • Bare wire to grounding wire from light.
At L1:
  • White wire from S1 to white wire from L2 to white wire from light.
  • Black wire from S2 to black wire from L2 to black wire from light.
  • Red wire from S1 to red wire from S2.
  • Black wire from S1 to white wire from S2.
  • All three bare wires to grounding wire from light.
Remark both ends of the white wire between L1 and S2 with a black marker to indicate that it is hot.

alright, here's the deal. i have the switches and lights connected just like you've said. S1 is connected to the supply correctly. BUT, when i insert a bulb into L2's fixture, the circuit breaker switches off. as long as there's no bulb in L2, the circuit is smooth with no flicker. i am using 65 watt bulbs in each fixture. before switch 1, the supply runs through a bedroom. any idea what the problem may be?

The breaker switches off instantly, or it switches off after a while (how long)? Is the breaker an ordinary breaker, or is it a GFCI or AFCI breaker?
