Old Hot Tub outlet

I have recently gotten rid of my outdoor hot tub and have a 240 volt, 50 amp box outside. I would like to convert this to a regular outdoor outlet, for use with Christmas lights and other general use electrical yard equipment. Is this possible and if so it the fact that it is 240 a problem with having too much power and burning out the motors on my equipment?

It is possible, but it may be so much work that it might be easier to ignore it and put in a new circuit for your Christmas lights.

Would it be a good idea to just use one of the hot wires to make the outlet function on 110 and then just cap the other hot?

I don't believe so. To do it with a reasonable margin of safety and within code, this project would involve a lot more work than what you suggest.

keg,

what john suggest about this . this will cost quite a bit but i really can't get into all the details for safety reason but per nec and local codes it is pretty strict . it is far more cheaper just run new line for outdoor outlet for chrismas light ,etc...

i done this type of work few time and i did warn them in ahead of the time before i work on it and let them know what the cost and the options can be done properly withen nec/local codes

merci , marc

Remove said cable from panel. Set a junction box at both ends of said cable. change breaker to two single pole 20A breakers feeding black & red phase wires in new box at panel. then put GFCI outlets in new outdoors box.
Or, put small breaker panel at end of 50A cable, feed GFCI 20A outlets as desired.
Urge having licensed sparky do this work!
