switch won't work.

I was sistering a joist (over the bathroom) in the attic today. Now the light switch in the bathroom underneath will not work. Any suggestions? I don't see any breaks in the wire. Also, I notice that there is a free wire that is fed through to the bathroom light switch downstairs. It is just sitting there. Is this normal?

Could be that the vibrations from the hammering opened up a loose connection. Luckily, by NEC requirements, all splices must be in permanently assessible junction boxes (now you know why this rule exists). So just open up all the junction boxes and check the connections. In addition to checking all wire nuts for tightness and pulling on each wire to make sure it is held securely, move all backstabbed connections (poked in a hole in the back of a switch or receptacle) to the adjacent screws.

Not quite sure what you mean by a "free wire" and "just sitting there".
