glare from recessed lighting

my house has recessed lighting almost everywhere. i've noticed that (different from my previous place) that these lights cast a fairly harsh downlight, even with flood bulbs - i think at least partly because there is no light scattering off the ceiling, as i would get with traditional fixtures. the situation is more severe in the basement, where the ceiling is about 7'6, rather than 8'2 in the rest of the place. any ideas on how to diffuse the lights more evenly?

Almost all "down Lighting" is going to glare, especially right beneath the fixture. You may want to try soft light bulbs that are frosted, like GE Reveal. (Make sure the wattage is correct for the fixture.) Another option, if applicable, is to replace older recessed lights with newer ones that have moveable "eyeballs", that way you can at least direct the light to some degree and lessen the glare. If not replaceable, see if you can find some type of "diffuser" that goes over the light, this will help spread the light around a bit and soften as well. Make sure the diffuser is made for that light fixture and allows heat to dissipate.

What type of recessed lighting is this?

these are 5 inch recessed fixtures, using appropriate class and size of frosted soft white bulbs (not simply using type A).

i havent seen diffusers that would fit over the bulbs but will check around. house has two brands - atlite and tasco. i think that tasco is a halo clone, and atlite was acquired by halo some years ago. the tasco's are straight recessed in the basment. the atlites are eyeballs in the main floor cathedral ceiling of a ranch house. we are looking to replace those with semi-recessed halogens, if i can get them to fit a 5 inch fixture to get rid of the frog eye effect. - so i dont think i will introduce the thought of putting them in NEW locations in the house!

thanks for the suggestions..
