D.C. Motor

The motor on my treadmill runs very slow. How can I check the 1 h.p. variable speed motor to see if it is bad or if the speed control is the problem? I checked the voltage comming out of the control and it goes from 0 to about 96 volts d.c.when there is no load on it. Is that enough? I can't find anyone in our area to test the motor. Thanks.

Most variable speed drives adjust the speed by adjusting the frequency. Do you have a frequency meter?

No I don't I was hoping a volt meter could test it.
Thanks for your reply Ron.

DC motors adjust with voltage, not frequency. 0-96 is the correct range for one class of DC variable speeds , but you need to check it under load. Without a known good load you will have to just try replacing one part or the other.
