changing trims in recessed lights

I have a number of recessed lights in a cathedral ceiling. the lights were made by Atlite, and the eyeballs protrude fairly far beyond the ceiling. the eyeballs are secured to the can by two spring pins that ride in a groove in the rim of the can, just behind the plaster face, and allow the light to tilt or rotate.

but they look like... frogs with a thyroid condition, because nearly half the eyeball protrudes beyonf the plaster face.

I have seen Halo trims that recess the bulb deeper into the can, but they require tabs halfway up the can to hold the butterfly springs- and the Atlites do not have these tabs.

any suggestions on how to mount the Halo trims in Atlite cans, or other ways to move the lamps out of the 70's without destroying most of my ceiling?

Accroding to my Info Atlites focus is lighting compliant to NYC code. They are still manufactured, so trims should be available through an electric supply house (probably right off the shelf if you live in NYC.) Beyond that, Atlite is a division of Cooper lighting, as is Halo. there trims may be interchangable. However, the trims you speak of apparantly will not work with the lights you have.

I'd suggest calling Cooper's support line (770) 486-4800. They should be able to give you compatibility information and point you towords a distributor in your area.

thanks.. i was told that atlite has discontinued their recessed lights. the halo trims that would be best for my need definitely do not work in the atlite cans, because the cans do not have the tabs to hold the butterfly springs. :-{
i will check their support line and check other supply houses - the two i talked with did not carry atlite.

According to Cooper lightings websight, they still make recessed downlights. But, based on the catalog info, it appears they may have ceased production of residential grade equipment. Most of what I saw was non IC rated commercail product, mostly biax flouresent or HID.

Don't know for sure about your brand, but some fixtures have the tabs pressed into them, but are still flush with the can. They just have to be pried out with a screwdriver. Look closely and see if yours have such a tab. { fingers crossed }

nope, i did look for them. all i have is 6 or 8 mounting slots that are about 2 inches long, shaped like a telephone pole, that end near the rim of the can. i tried to use butterfly springs in those slots, but it doesnt work. light-weight coil springs used for some halo trims don't have the right combinaiton of tension and extensability to work in those slots. thanks for the suggestion!
