rewiring 3 speed ceiling fan

The fan/speed control in my ceiling fan broke. Rather than replace the whole fan, I'd like to just replace the control. Only problem is I don't know what colors go to what.
The colors I have are orange, yellow, black and purple. I'm assuming that 3 of the colors are the various speeds and one is the on/off. I don't know the brand.
I'm sure one of you electrical wizards can solve this problem.
Thanks in advace

I am assuming that you mean the pull-chain switch inside the fan housing broke. From your description, you have a 4 wire switch. I would go to one of the box stores and purchase a replacement. Then note any markings on the existing switch (terminals should be labled) Then move the wires from the bad switch to the corresponding terminal on the new switch. If you cannot determine how to connect to the new switch, write back with the terminal markings from the two switches and we might be able to help. Good luck!

rewiring pull chain on 3 sp fan

Thanks for your reply. I finally took another 3 speed fan apart and figured out the configuration.
Thanks
