underground service to house
ok, 1 more question:
we currently have overhead service from the pole, but before I redo the driveway, I thought I'd bury some conduit so that when we're ready to run wires underground, there would be no need to dig up the driveway (ok, there's always a need to dig up the driveway) so, can you put down the pipe now? and if so, is there a recommended way to seal off the ends to keep out critters, etc.
thanks again! vd.

You should talk to the POCO about who is responsable for undergrounding the service. You could be required to pay them to perform the job, and they may not be willing to use conduit. Wires in earth contact heat less than wires in conduit. They often use different wiring methods than the NEC since it does not apply to service distribution equipment except in limited ways.

My poco supplies the meter base, owner to install and chages 6$ a foot for direct burial and 3$ if it is piped. At 30ft it will go in 2 inch, they actually let you use any kind of pipe. Last time I used 3 inch and have used 4 inch sewer line on them too. You need to change to 2 or 3 inch to come to the meter base coming out of the ground depending on base. I supplied pull rope already installed in pipe.

You could save a couple bucks if you bury the conduit.
I don't believe you would have to dig up the driveway though, unless you have very rocky ground.
When I had my sevice buried the utillity company used a Hole Hog (I believe that is the name of it). They just dug a small hole
where they wanted to start and finish and go under roads and driveways etc...
The utillity company even buried 50 foot at no charge I think as an incentive to get people to do it so they can get rid of the poles.

Your POCO's service standards may be published on line. Allegheney is for instance. http://www.alleghenypower.com/CSC/Se...ages/Fig20.pdf
