Aluminum Wiring

I'm considering buying a house (Ontario, Canada) that has 12 guage aluminum wiring.

Is this a problem? I've heard of the connections loosening over time and causing fires.

A house with aluminum wiring is like a house with asbestos. It's a curse. If you plan on living there a long, long time, it isn't that big of an issue (especially if you get a good deal on the price). The biggest question is whether or not the risk has already been mitigated by replacing all the receptacles and switches. If not, you'll need to do that.

The biggest drawback is that the house may be very, very difficult to sell when you need to. The reputation of the problem is worse than the actual problem. Most buyers will walk away without even considering the house.

Also check with your insurance agent to see if it will be more expensive to insure.
