How do I find what wire is what
I took the outside light off and both wires are black! How do I find out which is white??
Also, I just took the chance and rewired a new light. The light lit up but I didn't keep it on. If the light is not wired correctly what will happen, I figured that the light would short out, will any other wiring in the house be affected, will the fuse box smoke? The light is turned off. My daughter was using the dryer the same evening and the fuse box got hot, and the wiring by the dryer got hot, could there be a connection.
Thank you

Go to Home Depot and buy a $15 "tick" tester. It is a proximity tester and will chirp and flash when you hold it near a hot wire. It's kind of fun. Everybody should have this toy.
If you wired it backwards, the light will work fine but it won't quite be as safe as it would be if you did it right. It's not the greatest hazard in the world, but it's worth getting it right.
I doubt that there is any connection between this and the other symptoms you mentioned.
