Retractable pendant light

We're redoing the kitcken and adding a breakfast/work island counter against on wall. We'd like to hang a pendant there but the retractables I'm seeing are too fancy schmancy and far too pricey. Is there a product along the lines of a retractable cord that might do the job? We've got 9 1/4" of room to play with and I figure we could hide it in the ceiling with cord comng through a decorative trim plate.

Many of the houses in our area built post WWII had retractable ceiling fixtures over the kitchen table. The cable came from the ceiling down to a retractor, then down to the fixture. The retractor was spring loaded and hung in the center of the cable. I do not know if these are still available, but it would look much nicer than a trouble light reel. Good luck!

My house had one of those lights. it was the ugliest light I have ever seen. It came down on day one, my wife couldn't get to the sorte fast enough to find anything different. I'll gladly sell it to you.
