I am installing a dimmer switch. The outlet has a white and black wire. The dimmer has a red, yellow and black wires. The instructions are unclear....which goes where? Thanks in advance.

you probably picked up a 3 way dimmer. A "regular" dimmer only has 2 wires, usually both black (and pehaps a green ground).

The instructions should be quite clear if you understand them.
To use a 3-way as a S.P. you use the "common" wire and one of the others, known as "travelers". Isolate the remaining as it has voltage when the lighs are off.
