electrical/ generator connection

I want to install a 40 kw generator. If I have an existing 400 amp service, how is the transfer switch connected to the main service.

A 40 kw generator will only provide with a 166 amps at 240 volts. There will need to be some load shedding involved.

Is it a single 400A service or parallel 200A?
With 2- 200A services we sometimes will put all the generator loads in one panel and all the non-critical loads in the other, being careful to try and keep the load as balanced as can be. You can then use a less expensive 200A transfer switch.

With a single 400A service you'll need a 400A transfer switch. Depending on the gen-set you get this can be automatic or manual.

Is this a home or commercial. 40kw is a whopper for a home.
