Fellow gearhead, more info is needed. Define socket. To most of us it's a lamp socket. Do you mean a wall receptacle?
Also, explain something going on and off.
Let us know.

It was a socket in a portable lamp. And now the lights in our house dim at any needed power (i.e. furnace, stove, computer, TV, etc)

Define "shorted". Did somebody drop a quarter into the socket?

Sounds like a connection has come loose. May be unrelated to the socket incident. If the dimming lights are on different circuits than the load that causes them to dim, you may want to start by calling your power company. They will come out and check their equipment and connections. It's a standard thing they do for their customers. Post back and tell us what the power company says.
