no lights

Wondering where to start to fix a no lights situation. My upstairs hallway lights and down stairs entry lights are out. I have a circuit breaker and checked it by turning all of them off then back on and no luck. This has happened in the past where it has been tripped. This time I was just upstairs and they just went out. I thought it was the light bulb, but a brand new one still didn't work and checked to make sure the light switch was on.

Is this something I could fix myself or should I call the electical company or an electrician?

Depending on your skill level, availability of tools and time and your comfort level around electricity you may be able to fix this yourself. Just to give you an idea , you will need voltage testers an the ability to safely trace and test an electrical circuit. This will also require you to disassemble electrical devices and be able to reassemble them as well. This will take time and patience as well as accurate descriptions so that we can answer ?'s as they arise.

If this sounds like something you wanna do lets go. otherwise when you call an electrician get references and make sure he is liscensed bonded and insured.

It's always useful to think hard about the last time they worked, the first time you noticed that they didn't work, and what might have happened between those two times.
