Dimmer noise

I have just replaced one of my three way switches with a dimmer switch that controls four indoor recessed can lights. This caused a humm at the bulbs.
I am using four 75 watt spots and I used a three way, 1000 watt dimmer.
Can anyone tell me what causes this "humm" and how I can correct this?

The hum is the filiment in the bilb vibrating due to the voltage quality that is emitted from the dimmer. See if you can replace the bulbs with heady duty (or 130V rated) bulbs. The filiment on this type is thicker, and doesn't vibrate as much.

Usually a simple switch in the brand of bulbs will cure this. Try Philips, Sylvania and GE.

Changing the bulbs seems to work. I went from some generic brand made in Hungry to a Philips same voltage, same watts, good result. The 130v. was not available at my local big box store. Thanks so much for your help.
