Question how close to edge of stud / joist

How close can I put a wire to the edge of a stud / joist?
Near the panel, there are so many wires that I have
filled the face of a joist, leaving a wire within an inch or
so of the edge of the joist. Should I move these wires
back towards the center of the joist?

Thanks!

Closer than an 1-1/4" requires a nail plate installed for protection.

I was afraid you'd say that.

Even if the wire is stapled to the side of the stud / joist,
not running through it?

So, here's my follow up question - what's the best way
to remove those staples ?
