old wire in a lamp

I am trying to install a light and the wire is wrapped in cloth.One is white with gold and the other is white and black.Which is the hot and which is the ground or black wire?

A $15 voltage "tick" tester at Home Depot will answer that question for you. Or if you have a grounded box, any voltmeter or $2 neon tester will tell you. Or a continuity tester can tell you by testing for continuity to either the lamp shell or the plug blades (whichever is at the other end from the connections you are trying to make).
