Remove base of broken light bulb from socket

While removing a burned out light bulb from my range hood, the bulb broke, leaving the base in the socket. What can I do to remove the base so I can install a new bulb?

I've got two solutions that have worked for me:

1) Two small needle nose pliers. Just bend the base in enough to get the tips in and rotate both pliers at the same time. You might need a second person to hold the fixture if it wants to move.

2) If there is enough glass left attached to the base then you might also try half of a potato. Cut it in half and just push it onto whats left of the bulb and turn it while pressing down.

You should, of course, turn the power off before inserting anything into what is left of the bulb (fingers, pliers, potato, whatever).

And "turn off the power" means at the breaker box.

Remove base of broken light bulb

Thanks to all who replied. It seems that the glass did not break at all, but just twisted out of the base of the blub...clean. So with some efort, I was able to remove the base without damaging the socket with a needle nose pliers. Happy New Year!
