3 way lamp

Help. I have a 3 way lamp that didn't work so I bought a new 3 way socket and put it in the lamp but all I get is on and off.
Why???? The bag the switch came in said it was a three way. There are only 2 wires so I hooked them up and only get on and off.
Anyone know why or how I can fix it?
Thanks

Is the bulb new? If one filament in the 3-way lamp is broken it will act like a regular on-off lamp.

Is it a 3 way bulb. A 3way socket will only have 2 wires just like a regular socket.

A Duh....it was the bulb. It was a three way bulb and I replaced it and it's fine. The good news is with the old socket it didn't light at all so I did something right.
Thanks for your help gentlemen....live and learn.
