3 black wires

My garage burned down....I rebuilt the garage and am doing a little wiring...I have a three way switch coming from my kitchen to the garage and all three wires are black...how do I find out which one is the common?... can I use just a test light or can I use a volt meter...( when I used the test light it would light up for all the wires...Am I correct in assuming that 2 of the wires are hot?...If testing with a test light do I need to ground the test light on something other than the wires?)I have a meter but am not to familiar with How to use it..Thanks

There is a complicated test procedure you could use, but trial and error is fine too. There are only three choices, so you will hit upon the right solution in three tries or less.

3 wires

run yourself a ground wire to where your 3 wires are, set your meter for 150 volts,ac. one wire will be hot, mark that wire, then flip your switch, locate the next hot wire wnd mark that one. the remaining wire will go to the light.
